2014 Cannondale F29 Carbon 3 // My new race bike

Getting a new bike is always very exciting. Getting something that I have been dreaming about since I started mountain biking is a whole new level. I am a very big fan of Cannondale bikes for a long time and finally the time has come for me to get my hands on one of their race hardtails, the F29 Carbon 3.

I was thinking about getting a 29er for a good while. Even though I was on a 27,5" bike for the last 6 months, but I made my decision and went for the big wheels.

The size small F29

This model is the first in Cannondale's Flash range that comes with a carbon fibre frame. I've had a carbon MTB before so I knew what to expect. Light, stiff, comfortable and not to forget the stunning design.

The frame is a Ballestic carbon frame with Cannondale's own Speed Save design for increased comfort, with BB30 bottom bracket and 1,5" SI headtube for maximum handling precision. The cables aren't internal but that's ok with me, I prefer to have them nice and straight forward when it comes to maintenance.

Great looking design

Now, that is a straight line!

Direct mount front mech design

Slim rear triangle for maximum comfort

The bike comes with a Lefty PBR fork that has 90 mm travel and was built with Hybrid Needle Bearing Technology. As we all know the Lefty fork is one of those things that create a huge difference of opinion between riders. Although it is out for 13 years and have had many generations over the years, riders still looking at it with a funny eye. Some riders just don't like it and some others (like myself) are do. They are light, stiff, smooth and look brilliantly unique. What's not to like? :)

The Lefty PBR with the new plastic protector plate (nice touch Cannondale!)

The front wheel's soul is the Lefty specific hub that is being fitted to the fork with a single bolt

Rebound adjuster & lock-out on the top of the Lefty + the neath looking OPI stem

The specifacion of the bike really suits my taste since I'm a Sram guy myself. The X.7 shifters and X.9 derailleurs creating a good system with the PG 1030 10 speed casette (11-32T) and with the KMC X10 chain. It does what it's ment to be doing: works without hassle.

The Magura MT2 W/BAT brakes are great choice too. They are light and very powerful brakes with lever adjustibility. The bike comes with 160mm rotor on the back and 180mm on the front.

The tubeless ready wheels with ZTR Rapid 29er rims and X.9 rear and Lefty SL front hubs are built with 32 DT SWISS Competition spokes and got fitted with Schwalbe Racing Ralph Evo 29x2.1 tyres. They are still running tubes but will be converted to tubeless asap.

The final touches are the Cannondale C2 flat handlebar (700mm wide) and the C2 27.2mm x 400mm seatpost with my own Fi'zi:k Tundra saddle.

So, this is my new machine that I'll be riding from now on. Can't waith to ride this savage bike and I'm sure I will have countless hours of fun in the saddle. The funny thing is that I got back to my roots, I'm back on the hardtail again. Old habits die hard as they say! :)

  1. András, any chance you could give a final review of your Anthem 27.5 2? Was there a problem with the Anthem that made you switch?

    Thanks.

  2. Hey,

There was absolutely no problem with the Anthem. The reason I changed is the fact I have changed work recently. The bike was a sponsor bike from the shop I was working and of course I had to give it back when I left. The F29 I got was something that I preferred for a long time and since I'm selling Cannondale in the new shop it was a straight forward choice.

The Anthem is a brilliant machine: very agile, very comfortable and fun to ride indeed. If you're thinking about getting one wait no more!

I prefer the efficiency and simplicity of the hardtails and the 29er suits me the best for what I'm doing on the bike.

    Hope I could help,
    Andras

  3. Thanks for the update András. I have been following your blog for sometime and I have recently placed an order for the same Anthem you had based a little bit on your positive reviews. I'm glad to hear your change wasn't down to any concerns :)

Thanks for posting the update and good luck in the XC Champs!

  4. Excellent choice, I love this bike. And nice blog!! I have a question for you, because I want to buy the same bike, whats your height? Regards!!!

  5. Ah, cheers man! Yeah, it's a fantastic machine, if you pick one up you won't regret it that's for sure!
I'm 166 cm tall (I mean short), so the size S frame fit's me very well! :)

  6. Hey Andras, have you made any upgrades, aside from the saddle, since purchase that are worth while? Also, is the x9 rear hub a QR or a 12x135 thru axle? Looking to buy one also and was looking for some insight. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hey,

The X.9 rear hub is standard QR alright. Yeah, I've changed a few things since I have the bike:

1., I have converted the gear system to a 1x10 running a narrow-wide Race Face 34T ring on the front and a Hope 40T-Rex range extender on the casette that leaves me with 11-40 on the back.

2., Changed the Magura brakes to Avid (wasn't planned, just needed a quick solution for an issue I had with the Magura). Lovin' the Avid, so will leave them on anyway.

3., Changed the Schwalbe tyres to Maxxis Crossmark recently.

4., Changed the stock rubber grips, got Cannondale foam lock-on ones fitted.

That's all I've done. Love the bike, brilliant machine indeed. Proper weapon on any XC or Marathon course!! ;)

Hope I could help, best of luck with it if you going ahead with one!

    1. Hey Andras, nice review bud.

I also got myself the F29 Carbon 3, what a machine, super fast, super strong!

Few things I upgraded though, changed to

      - Cannondale SAVE seatpost
      - Easton EC70 Carbon bar
      - ESI race grips

Will eventually upgrade to full Sram X01 components, all groupsets.

What issue did you have with Magura brakes, should I be concerned with mine?

      Thanks

    2. Hey Patrick,

Cheers man, glad you like to read the post! :)

Yeah, same here: love the efficiency, the speed. This machine is a rocket on the climbs. Just got the ESI grips, they are brilliant as well.

Nope, there's no issue with the Maguras at all. What happened was the brake hose was damaged on the bike straight from the box. The brake was functioning ok, but wasn't really 100%. But then I had trouble to get the replacement hose (stock availability problem...) so I just got the Avids on the bike as they were accesseble to me to use. Other than that the Maguras were great, not a bother at all.

Ejnoy the bike man, hope you'll love it as much as I do!

    3. Andras. Tks for the feedback - I'm the one who originally asked about what upgrades you made. I was able to get my hands on one and can say that having ridden a ulta-lightweight alum 26er for the past 11 years (that's been beating me up quite a bit recently), the Carbon 3 is by far the most comfortable and compliant bike I have ever ridden. Not to mention that is goes like a freight train! The Lefty is absolutely phenominal. The bike is so smooth that I almost forgot that I was ridding on dirt. It's like ridding in a Bentley with the performance of a Ferrari! Anywho, I digress... Did make a couple of upgrades that I thought worth while that puts the bike at 10.4kg with XT pedals. The ZTR Rapids were swapped out with custom built Pacenti TL28s that weigh in at 1639g (Lefty front hub and DT Swiss 350 rear) fitted with Maxxis Icons 2.2 running tubeless and the cassette was changed to a XT. Extremely happy with the bike. The only two negatives I can see with the bike are the Magura MT2 brakes -- find them weak plus they started making a clicking sound under heavy braking sort of like it has ABS. Also the Prologo saddle is not as comfortable as say a Selle Italia. Happy trails dude!

    4. Brilliant! Glad to hear that you are as happy with the bike as I am! Defo the nicest ride, lovin' it indeed!! #happyasakidinasweetshop :D

    5. I'm curious how you put the 34t chainring up front? I put a 32t chainring on my Flash Carbon 29er and the teeth are VERY close to the chainstay... I don't like it at all. I'm still using the 2x10 spider and have the chainring mounted on the inside. I'm thinking of moving it to the outside, but that will make for a bad chainline to my lower climbing gears...

    6. Hey Eric,

What year is the bike from? The 2014 model comes with BB30, Sram double chainset and a wide spacer between the BB shell and the crank arm. I haven't changed anything but the chainring. I still have a good bit of a clearance though... I would say try to use spacers and push the crank a bit further out than it is now, it should work.

      All the best,
      András

    1. Nice one, the new models look great. The last time I checked the weight it was 10.3 kg. Happy with that but of course always working on some project that makes it lighter! ;)

    2. ive just ordered the exact same bike, the small f29 2014, i wondered if you know what the weight of the bike is straight out of the box ? i have a full xx1 groupset on my spark and im wondering iff i should change the parts over

      Delete
    3. Hey Ian,

Sorry, but I wouldn't know for sure but roughly it is 11kg straight out of the box. If you have a XX1 group don't hesitate, throw it on the F29 asap! It'll be definitely much lighter and will work much better than the original parts. Also do a tubeless conversion as soon as you can, it'll drop a fair bit of weight off the 29er wheels. I hope I could help and hope you'll love the F29 as much as I do!! Good luck with it! :)

    6. Hey Ian!

Sorry for the late reply. Great stuff, good to hear that the bike is with you and the work has already started! You'll love it! :)

Well, to be honest I couldn't tell you what pressure I have the Lefty set up. I would rather say to work with 20% sag and you'll be grand. You can set this up without a problem but if you like you can ask the lads at the bike shop, they'll sort this out for you.
Have a great ride and let me know what's your opinion after the first proper test spin, ok?

    1. Well, it would work I think not a bother. Won't be a commuter bike but if you have your heart set on a Cannondale and the availability is low on them I think the F29 would be the solution. The big wheels will be great to use, will make the commute feel easy I'd say. It would be much lighter than the Bad Boy, so there's a little bonus too. Hope it'll work for you man.

  14. Hi András - nice review & super fotos.
Made my first and only run 65 km last year with 1000 participants and ended up as 165 with one puncture under my way.
My mtb is a Danish 26" (Jensen) 3 years old and although i'm ok with it, I know there have been many improvements since I got it. Could probably make it better on tracks, and of course thinking about the feelling riding a Cannondale :-). Can you tell me if there is any improvements on the 2015 version compared with 2014?
Any suggestions to pedals? Did I miss it some where ...?

    1. Hey man,

      Good stuff, great result! Congrats!

Well, there's a big difference between the F29 and the all new FSi. But there isn't a huge difference between the 2014 and the 2015 F29 models as far as I know. Sure, there's the spec and a few small details but nothing big I'd say.

About pedals: I used to race CrankBrothers EggBeaters for years, they are great pedals. Also tested Look S-Track pedals for a while, they were ok too. Bit tricky to adjust the cleats though...
Currently I use Shimano XTR's and I'm very-very impressed with them. Very light, very strong and super reliable. Not planning to change them any time soon, haha! :)

Hope I could help a bit! And one more thing: when you have a chance to get your hands on the F29 don't hesitate even for a minute! You won't regret it! :)

  15. Thanks 4 your reply - I'm sold to the F29 :-)
XTR is noted. What about the rims are they tubeless? Can you explain what it can give on the tracks? Pretty confused about this ...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yep, the wheels were tubeless ready, could use them without any conversion kit.
It took me very-very long time to switch to tubeless but when I did I knew it was a good decision!!
Tubeless tyres run lower air pressure. They have much better traction (steers better, climbs better) and you also get less punctures (no snake bites at all). Also a big weight saving on 29er wheels!
The whole ride feels faster and more confident, especially on technical stuff.

  17. Andras,

I just bought a 2014 F29 Carbon 3 today! Thanks for all the great info you posted - it was super helpful and really helped me make my decision to purchase. I'm from the Canadian prairies… we're still in the middle of a cold winter (-25C tonight) but I can't wait to get on the trials this spring. Great blog - i look forward to following you.

  18. Hi Andras,

I've always had a soft spot for Cannondale bikes and in the past I always had a medium (18"), but I prefer a bike with allot of seatpost so I'm thinking of put my 1.74m on a small... If you wouldn't mind sharing what seat height and reach do you have in the pictures? Will give me an idea of what I would need to adjust. Looking at the trail 29er singlespeed. Many thanks and keep up the great blog. :)

    1. Hey,

Nice one, the SS 29er is absolutely lovely!

About the size I would really stay on the M if I can say it this way. I used to sell Cannondale bikes in the bike shop where I used to work and for your height I would recommend the M frame size for sure. I think the S would be too small (mainly too short).

I have the measurements here for you, hope they'll help also.

seat height (from the floor to the top of the saddle) : 95,5 cm
reach (centre of the saddle to the centre of the handlebar): 65 cm

It is a short bike and you could feel pretty compacted on the S size. Probably you'll look into fitting longer stem and push the saddle all the way back to get comfy...

      Hope I could help!

      Best of luck,
      András

  20. Hi Andras,

I am about to order the Cannondale F29 carbon 3 2015 model but still have few questions:
    - reading your excellent review you should have the bike now for about 1.5 years. are you still satisfied with it?
    - did you have any problems with the standard SRAM X7 set that is mounted as standard on the bike? I read some negative reviews about it...
    - and then a personal question: I have inseam of 81,5cm and am 177cm in length. looking at the size chart that means I should have an M-size but could also go for the L-size. what would you recommend?

thanks already in advance, and really very good review!

    1. Hey,

Thanks a lot for liking the review, I'm happy to hear it! :)

      - Well, I don't have the bike anymore. I sold it during the summer. I absolutely loved it and I was very satisfied with it, I sold it for different reasons...
      - The X7 and X9 combination was pretty good in my opinion, never had problems with it. Now, you need to be realistic about them though, they are not high parts but they work well I think. Of course there's always room to upgrade later down the road.
      - I would defo go for the size M. Large could also work for you but the reach is shorter on the Medium, so you would be more comfortable and the bike would also be a bit more agile.

I hope I could help, if there's anything else just give me a shout! Cheers and all the best with the new machine!!

  21. Hi Andras. I had my absolute best summer of riding on my 2014 F29 carbon 3! I did well in a couple of races including a 50mile event which is something I never would have tried before. I upgraded the shifters to X9 and went Tubeless and I look forward to every minute on the bike. Thanks again for your blog and have a good holiday season.
